Families that workout together stay together. Okay, maybe not always. But they are generally happier and healthier. Here’s a sad look at what our busy lifestyles have done to us:
- 50% do not get enough exercise to develop healthy heart and lung systems
- 98% have at least 1 heart disease risk factor
- 13% have at least 5 or more risk factors
- 20% to 30% are obese
- 75% eat too much dietary fat
- 64% do not get enough exercise to maintain healthy heart and lung systems
- 24% never exercise
- 35% are overweight
- 30% smoke cigarettes
This is depressing.
But being fit is one of the biggest MOODLIFTERS there is!
Don’t know where to start? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Paxton and I got lucky because we already workout everyday, and one day my 7 year old daughter said, “I wanna start running with you, Mom.” So that’s our new thing, we run together, even if it’s only 10 minutes and I have to run more alone, I’m so happy it’s getting into her blood. Once it’s in your blood, it’s hard to stop, so the earlier the better and easier. And the best part is that the little guys wanted to start running, lunging, and squatting after seeing her do it. I notice their mood and attitude is better all day after they’ve gotten exercise. Sure, playing, trampoline jumping, swimming, all work just as well or better. Just make sure they are ACTUALLY doing those things and not sitting around in a bored daze all day. And incorporating a formal routine a couple of times a week helps them get in the habit early on. Don’t think of it as “ugh…. one more thing to add to the schedule!” Think of it as one thing that is good for your family, that you actually enjoy, that you GET TO add to the schedule.
